Do you already have a degree in data? Do you want to specialize in skills that are needed everywhere in society? Does it feel interesting to have the opportunity to work in almost any industry you want? Then you should pursue a master’s in cybersecurity – either online or on-site at Campus Skellefteå.
This is an area that is only becoming more important – and for more and more industries in both the private and public sectors. Skills in cybersecurity are among the hottest you can have on your resume. In fact, it is one of the most sought-after job categories in Sweden, according to LinkedIn's list “Jobs on the rise.” Not so bad, regardless of what kind of career you have in mind. With a master’s degree, you open the doors to almost unlimited opportunities.
Great need for skills in the field
Karl Andersson is a professor and subject representative in cybersecurity at Luleå University of Technology, which is responsible for the education. He is asked: why is LTU starting this program now?
– There is a great need for skills in the field. We are not very many in Sweden who work with cybersecurity, and we want to contribute to educating competent people for both the private sector and public sector. Additionally, a master’s program makes one eligible for doctoral studies, and that path we hope of course some of the students will choose.
But it's not just the private sector and public sector that need experts in cybersecurity. It is also an important and relevant competence for total defense. LTU is part of the initiative Campus Total Defense with a total of 35 higher education institutions. Karl Andersson explains:
– The idea is that academia should primarily support the civilian parts of total defense with expertise supply, research, and innovation. I am myself a reserve officer and have been interested in these issues since the late eighties, so I see the collaboration between the institutions and the defense as both positive and urgent. For our students, it certainly means another career path. This education thus covers almost all societal sectors.
Great opportunities for a good job – in Sweden and internationally
Who do you need to be for the education to suit you? Besides having a bachelor's degree in computer or electrical engineering, a prerequisite is that you enjoy solving problems and thinking strategically. Cybersecurity largely involves staying one step ahead of hackers, analyzing threats, and building smart defenses. It is also an advantage if you can think creatively and have the ability to quickly find new solutions. Many of the roles in the industry involve working in teams and leading others, so good social skills and leadership abilities will come in handy.
Since the education is offered entirely in English, the whole world is at your feet when you graduate. You can thus study at home while securing the opportunity to be in demand in an international recruitment market. The subject representative particularly emphasizes the program's close ties to the various branches of the industry:
– The most important thing we offer students is the great opportunity for good jobs. In the master's program, one gets insight into current issues from both companies and authorities. Hardly a day goes by without something happening in the field, and we have many external connections. Our guest lecturers are from the industry, which can include experts from leading companies or specialists regionally, nationally, or globally. The master's program offers great choices in a very good job market, concludes Karl Andersson.
