Are you interested in a profession with very good job opportunities and a chance for varied and socially important tasks? Then the surveying program is something for you. In the fall, you can study it remotely from Skellefteå via the University of Gävle.
The societies we live in are growing and becoming increasingly complex. For those who have completed a surveying education, there are many career paths in various possible professional roles. In general, you will work to ensure that future cities use land sustainably with climate-smart solutions – but you can do this in a variety of industries and services. Are you curious about modern working methods? Good, because here you will learn more – surveyors use various tools, such as drones, satellite images, and 3D mapping, to facilitate their work.
– It's a really fun industry where you truly feel like you're contributing to the development of society, confirms Sofia Lundman, who is a land and development engineer at Skellefteå municipality.
– Urban planning is an evolving industry. The professional roles are changing just like society, and we embrace new technology, but we definitely belong to a profession that cannot be replaced by AI. What we do requires both experience and daily contact with people, both colleagues and external actors such as landowners, real estate companies, and contractors.
"It is a really fun industry where you genuinely feel that you are contributing to the development of society."
Focus on law and economics provides broad opportunities
Both law and economics play a significant role in both the professional daily life and education. Those who choose the surveying program can delve into property law and urban planning, and can for example apply to a law firm after graduation. Other career paths with very good employment opportunities are land and development engineer within the municipality, or property appraiser at construction companies.
So what is the best part about working in surveying and urban planning? The variety, according to land and development engineer Sofia Lundman.
– When choosing education, it is probably common to think that one must follow a certain path – I thought so too! However, studying urban planning means that you can have a varied and diverse career. If you are on this track, you have very good opportunities to work in both the private sector and in a municipality or government agency.
Education in close collaboration with the industry
The surveying program offers several courses in close collaboration with the industry, both companies and authorities. Therefore, you gain current and concrete knowledge and the opportunity to make contacts already during your studies.
At Campus Skellefteå, you can get help from the Student Center to reach your goals. In the surveying program, physical meetings occur a few times during years 2 and 3. Otherwise, the distance format allows you to manage your studies from home via the learning platform and online lectures.
