Technical preparatory year – for those of you who lack math or physics
Many programs in technology, IT and engineering require courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry that not everyone has taken in high school. In that case, a technical preparatory year can be the way in.
The preparatory year is a one-year upper-secondary-level program offered by universities and university colleges. The goal is to give you the specific eligibility required for, for example, engineering programs or other technical programs. At some institutions, you can also be guaranteed a place in a subsequent program if you complete the preparatory year successfully.
The technical preparatory year at Luleå University of Technology can be studied remotely, with only one required on-site period per term in Luleå. The program is now open for late application for autumn 2026.
Completing your grades can be faster than many think
You do not need to take an entire upper-secondary program to become eligible. Often it is enough to supplement one or a few individual courses through Komvux or adult education.
This could, for example, involve:
Mathematics 3c
Physics 2
Chemistry 1
English 6
Many municipalities also offer remote formats and flexible studies for adults, making it possible to combine with work or family.

Summer courses: a smart way to catch up
Summer courses are often associated with something extra, but for some they can actually be the difference between getting in or not.
For example, you can:
retake courses
earn university credits
try a new subject
improve your study skills before the fall
To receive student finance from CSN for summer studies, the course must be CSN-eligible and you must study at least 50 percent for at least three consecutive weeks during the summer.

The Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test can increase your chances
The Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test is not just for those trying to get into medical school. For many, it can be one of the fastest ways to increase their chances of getting into a program.
When you take the test, you compete in a separate selection group. This means that you can be admitted based on your test result even if your high school grades are not enough to get you all the way. In some programs and study locations, the competition can also be lower in the HP selection than in the grade-based selection.
It may be especially smart to take the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test if you:
have older high school grades
want to change direction later in life
do not want to retake several courses
are applying to programs with high admission scores
Many also take the test several times to improve their result over time.
Here are tips on how you can improve your score on the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.
