Health, care & welfare
After many years in wellness and training, Tina Antonsson, 35, began to study the nursing program at Umeå University, remotely.
– I have worked with health for a long time and have always had a great interest in training and the community it creates. But I also knew that I wanted to continue my studies, even though I didn't quite know what for, she says.
It was only after she herself had children that the direction became clearer.
– Then a much greater interest in how fantastic the female body is was awakened. Together with my interest in health and preventative work, it ultimately led me to choose the nursing education.
For Tina, the choice to study in Skellefteå was obvious. With a family and two children in school and preschool age, it was important to make everyday life work.
– Being able to study locally made it possible. I don't have to move and can simultaneously build upon a new career.
The education itself is varied and places demands on both theory and practice. Some periods consist of independent study and essay writing, while others include practical elements and workplace-based training in healthcare.
– It varies a lot depending on the course. Sometimes you sit a lot at the computer, and sometimes you are out in the field learning in real situations.
"I am truly passionate about women's health. I want to work to empower and support women through different stages of life, and contribute to ensuring that women's health has an even clearer place within healthcare."
The breadth of the profession is something that has surprised her the most.
– I knew it was a varied profession, but not that the opportunities were so many. During the internship, you get to try different areas and feel what suits you.
Flexible education makes everyday life easier
For Tina, it has already led to the next goal. She has managed to study for two years in the program and after graduation, she plans to continue studying to become a midwife.
– I am really passionate about women's health. I want to work to empower and support women through different stages of life, and contribute to giving women's health an even clearer place within healthcare.
At the same time, she highlights an aspect of the education that many might not think about – flexibility.
– The best part is the freedom. I can plan my days quite a lot myself, and choose whether I want to study at home or on campus. This also allows me to continue to work part-time and lead training classes.
For those considering applying to the nursing program but haven't quite decided, she has a concrete piece of advice: talk to someone who is already there.
– Get in touch with a student and ask them to tell you how the education actually is. Or talk to a nurse and maybe get to shadow them for a day. My experience is that many are very open and willing to share.
The nursing profession is one of the most sought after in Sweden, but for Tina, the choice was not just about the job market.
– For me, it's about being able to work with something that feels meaningful. To make a difference for other people in their everyday lives.
